A Brief History of the “Challenge Coin”
The “challenge coin” is a military tradition that dates back to World War I. A lieutenant in a U.S. flying squadron had coins engraved for each member of his unit. As the story goes, one of the pilots in that unit was shot down behind enemy lines. Although he was captured, he still possessed his squadron’s coin in a small leather pouch that hung from his neck. In the midst of a bombardment, he managed to escape from captivity. When he reached an allied outpost, he was forced to prove that he was not a German spy, but he did not have any personal identification. All he had was the coin on which his squadron’s insignia was engraved. Instead of being executed, he was given a bottle of wine. And so began the military’s challenge coin tradition.
